Terry Butler, Old Forge, Wins World Crossbow Gold

a pictureSept. 2009: Terry Butler, Director of Public Relations USA Crossbow Teams, has just returned from Portugal where he participates, as a member of the USA World Crossbow Team, in the WCSA World Crossbow Championships. There were 9 countries participating; Portugal, Japan, Sweden, Ireland, Great Britain, Australia, Chez Republic, Poland, and the USA.  The USA, with only 5 members, garnered 12 Medals in all.  8 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze.

In the World Target Competition, the USA Men swept the competition by winning the Men.s Team Gold and the Individual Men’s Division.  The USA Team beat their nearest rival by over 200 points; this is significant as usually less than 25 points separate team’s final scores, thus securing them the Gold Medal.  In the Individual competition, Brent Hankins, Ohio, a 17 year old high school senior, took Gold, Steven Pylypchuck, 23, from New Jersey, took Silver and Terry Butler, 62, took Bronze for 3rd  in the World.  Terry is considered at the Senior level of competition but elected to move up to the more competitive Men’s Division to aid the other USA Members in their quest for the Team Championship and a Gold Medal.

In Match Play Men’s Division the USA again swept the Competition.  In this event Terry again took the Bronze Medal for 3rd in the World.  All in all, the entire USA contingent each won a Gold Medal with 1 member earning 3 Golds.  No other Team got that many Golds.

This culminates a very successful competitive season of both indoor and outdoor tournaments.  Of the 22 International, National, State, and Regional competitions, Terry had 10 First Place finishes, 4 Second places, 5 Thirds places, 1- 4th place, 1-5th place, and 1-6th Place.

Even with all the Medals received the most rewarding and humbling moment came at the World Championships when, as the oldest member of the USA Team, he was chosen to carry the United States Flag in the Opening Ceremonies. To him nothing could ever top that HONOR.

a pictureApril 2008: For just a moment, I was Robin Hood.

The bow was in my left hand, the arrow was nocked in and ready to fly. I drew my dright hand back, touching the corner of my mouth with my index finger, and felt the tautness of the bow. I stared down the sight, and let it fly.
